I lived in Germany for quite a few years as a child and learned how to speak German as well as I could speak English. I used to translate for my parents when we went on vacation and even got them out of trouble a few times!
After 25 years and no one to speak German with, I forgot how to speak it almost entirely! That fact really got on my nerves! It was like losing a limb or like waking up one day and realizing you can't talk! I wanted to relearn, and I wanted to now!
I have tried a few courses in German in high school and College and never really got anywhere. The sentence structures and that Der Die Das thing really got on my nerves. I just couldn't grasp it. I even resorted to those mind numbing audio tapes! It was futile.
I was about to give up on it when I decided to find out why I was having so much trouble and if anyone else was having as much trouble as I was.
After a while of looking, I ran into the "About Memory" website. It had a lot of valuable information that included why adults are better at learning new languages than children are. Harvard Graduate Catherine Snow even said in an interview with HGSE News, "They (adults) master the greater cognitive and linguistic challenge of maintaining two languages, often at a very high level, with much greater success than do children."
One of the biggest problems I ran into when looking into this was the learning environment. Studies have shown that less than 5 percent of foreign language students complete the study. The rest of them drop out within 2 years because of current teaching methods. Learning to speak a language requires more than reading a book and repeating after me.
GermanFast.com, a German education website, says," Scientific research has proven that the most difficult learning task for children and adults alike may be the attempt to acquire second language proficiency in school environments." The site claims to have overcome this problem by applying a new set of learning strategies that give adults and children a more practical way of learning.
There are many ways that languages are taught. Books tend to teach how to read and write a language, but not how speak it. Audio tapes teach how to speak and understand a language, but not how to write it. Flash cards teach you the words, but not how to put them together.
The only ways to completely master a language is to be able to speak, listen, read, and write the language. Most individual teaching methods don’t go over all three aspects of the language and most people end up familiar wit a language, but do not have a complete mastery of it.
In reviewed products that taught languages looking for a course or product or something to give me the edge I needed to learn German again. Many of the do it yourself courses only offered a 12 cd set for 500$ for beginner lessons or a book and note cards or something of that manner. I only found 1 course set that had a complete well rounded listing and that was Rocket German from germanfast.com.
The Germanfast.com website has a CD set, videos, books, Pc games, and 24-7 on-call German instructors to answer any questions you may have! There are online video’s and even E-mail support. It was the only learning system that I have run across that has a well rounded learning system to teach you the 4 parts of language mastery.
I have placed some links for some language courses from the same company in case you are inetested.
